Pollination service delivery is complex: Urban garden crop yields are best explained by local canopy cover and garden scale plant species richness

چکیده
Pollination is an important ecosystem service to agriculture, however, the factors influencing pollination in urban food gardens are poorly understood. We investigated how features within environments, including floral resources and canopy cover, impacted (a) flower visitation seed production of a model plant (Brassica rapa) (b) total yields produce from Sydney, Australia. Floral plants was dominated by few common species, with honeybees responsible for 53.4% native stingless bees two hoverfly species accounting another 37.1% visitors; 28 other were collectively less than 10% visitation. While insect pollinators abundant, relationship between reproductive output weak not always positive. The success only marginally environmental features, while pollinator had small negative impact. However, crop across strongly influenced local cover garden scale richness. Synthesis applications. delivery complex; visitation, richness and/or resource availability may reflect positive, outcomes. Yields crops, whether dependent or not, more surrounding variables, broad measures diversity, pollination-related metrics. This implies policies support will likely differ those supporting require assessment management external factors.

Floral abundance, richness, and spatial distribution drive urban garden bee communities.
In urban landscapes, gardens provide refuges for bee diversity, but conservation potential may depend on local and landscape features. Foraging and population persistence of bee species, as well as overall pollinator community structure, may be supported by the abundance, richness, and spatial distribution of floral resources. Floral resources strongly differ in urban gardens. Using hand nettin...
متن کاملLinking Land Cover Data and Crop Yields for Mapping and Assessment of Pollination Services in Europe
Pollination is a key ecosystem service as many crops but in particular, fruits and vegetables are partially dependent on pollinating insects to produce food for human consumption. Here we assessed how pollination services are delivered at the European scale. We used this assessment to estimate the relative contribution of wild pollinators to crop production. We developed an index of relative po...
متن کاملKijani Grows: Visualizing an Urban Aquaponic Garden
Aquaponics, the portmanteau of “aquaculture” and “hydroponic”, is a sustainable food production system that combines the raising of aquatic animals such as fish in tanks (i.e. aquaculture) with the cultivation of plants in water (i.e. hydroponics) in a symbiotic environment [1]. In this paper we describe a new visualization approach that allows aquaponic gardeners to quickly monitor the status ...
متن کاملGarden Alive: an Emotionally Intelligent Interactive Garden
—In this paper, we introduce the " Garden Alive " system that allows users to interact with an emotionally intelligent virtual garden by manipulating tangible user interfaces. The Garden Alive aims to provide both entertainment and education. The proposed system is composed of three components. In the first module, tangible user interfaces bridge to the garden in a virtual world. In the second ...

The target paper of this commentary—“The Equilibrium Point Hypothesis and Its Application to Speech Motor Control”—by Perrier, Ostry, and Laboissière (hereafter POL) presents a sophisticated application of the λ-version of the Equilibrium Point Hypothesis to issues of linguistic concern in the control and coordination of speech articulators. This is done in terms of an elegant model of jaw biom...
